Pillars of American Art Song

Salon 21 takes an academic spin across American art song literature with a collaboration between voice and piano professors from University of Northern Kentucky and University of North Florida. Art Song is a form of music that can simply be defined as text set to music written for voice and piano. While this genre of music was famously refined by the greats of 19th century German music, there is a wide range of 20th century American composers who have contributed significantly to this art form. Kimberly Lazzeri, soprano; Krzysztof Biernacki, baritone; Erin Bennett, piano; and Richard van Dyke, piano present a survey of  Samuel Barber’s “Hermit Songs,” four songs from Aaron Copland’s “Twelve Songs of Emily Dickinson,” and Leonard Bernstein’s iconic “Arias and Barcaroles.”
